Johannesburg's young musicians turned up the volume at the St John's College Battle of the Bands on Saturday, 19 September, as ten school bands battled it out on stage in the final. 

St John's came to a standstill at 09h30 to remember the nine women whose bodies were discovered in Ekurhuleni. Our sister school, St Mary's, joined our young men as we paused, reflected, and said enough.

Twenty-five years after the attacks on the World Trade Centre, we remember Old Johannian Nicholas Charles Alexander Rowe (Clayton 1991).

St John's welcomed coaches from across the game for the inaugural Schools Basketball Coaches Conference, a first step toward shaping the future of school basketball together.

Michael George Lyme 'Gus' Mills (Alston 1963), who died on 12 July 2026, was one of Africa's foremost authorities on wild carnivores. His four decades of fieldwork in the Kalahari and Kruger reshaped how South Africa's national parks are managed, and his writing and photography brought that work to a far wider audience than science alone could reach. An Old Johannian of the class of 1963, he was awarded the College's Golden Eagle Award in 2023.

This July marks 110 years since the Battle of Delville Wood. To commemorate this, the Speaker of the City of Johannesburg, the South African Legion, the Memorable Order of Tin Hats (MOTH) and the South African Delville Wood Commemorative Museum Trust invited representatives from the College to lay a wreath for those who fell during the battle.

It is with deep sadness that St John’s College mourns the loss of one of its finest and most influential teachers, Mrs Sandy Frewen, who passed away on Monday, 29 June 2026.

The Peter Raney Cup honours the memory of Peter Raney, Head of Nash in 2011, and the values he lived by: sportsmanship, teamwork, commitment, dedication and integrity. This year we were proud to present the Cup to a young man who embodies everything Peter stood for.

St John's College and the Old Johannian Association are proud to announce the recipients of the 2026 Golden Eagle Award, conferred on two deserving Old Johannians on Gaudy Day in recognition of the extraordinary impact they have made in South Africa and internationally.
