St John's College

About St John's College

St John's College is a world-class Anglican school founded in 1898, just twelve years after the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand. Based in Houghton, Johannesburg, we number among South Africa's pre-eminent schools, with a reputation for excellence that extends well beyond the country's borders

St John's offers education from Grade 0000 through to Grade 12, with the option to read Cambridge A Levels or post-matric in Sixth Form.

We are unique in the South African school context in that we are a boys' school, bookended by girls: we welcome girls in the earliest phase of education at The Bridge Nursery School, and again in Sixth Form.

What sets St John's apart is not measured in accolades alone; it is found in our commitment to developing young people of character. This is a school with a soul, where values, tradition and excellence come together to create something truly exceptional. We believe in holistic education, where the lessons learned outside the classroom are just as important as those within it, where manners matter as much as marks.

We follow the rich traditions of the Anglican Church. Teaching is based on sound values and the Anglican ethos of respect and care, while also celebrating the traditions of other faith communities. Our purpose is values-based, character-focused education that is committed to excellence.

We teach our young people to think with a global mind and an African heart. As an African centre of excellence, we are internationally connected through our membership of the International Boys' Schools Coalition (IBSC) and the prestigious G30 Schools group, while remaining firmly rooted in our African context.

Education happens in partnership. Families and school work together in the development of each child, placing them at the centre of all decisions and ensuring they become the best version of themselves, whatever that may be.

We are proud of our heritage, culture and achievements, but we cannot become an island of privilege. Through the St John's College Academy, our Centenary Scholarship programme, and teacher internship initiatives, we play an active role in our community and invest in the future of South African education.

St John's College is a place where young people discover who they are meant to become, where character is forged alongside academic achievement. From their school days to joining our global Old Johannian network, they become part of a lifelong community. We invite you to become part of this journey.
