Dr Matthew Street (Head of School |Alston 1996) joined St John’s College in 1991 and served as Head of School in his matric year, 1996. During his time at the College, he distinguished himself both academically and on the sports field, embodying the values of leadership, commitment, and excellence.
After matriculating, Dr Street completed a Bachelor of Science in 1999 and a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 2005 at the University of the Witwatersrand. Alongside his studies, he pursued his passion for cricket, representing the Gauteng senior provincial team until 2005 and captaining the South African Under-19 team in the inaugural ICC Under-19 World Cup in 1998, hosted in South Africa.
Dr Street went on to specialise in Orthopaedic Surgery, obtaining his Fellowship with the College of Orthopaedic Surgeons of South Africa in 2013. He completed a Knee Fellowship at the Linksfield Sports and Rehabilitation Centre and the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital under the mentorship of Professor Firer.
He currently leads a knee and sports injury practice at the Centre for Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics in Rosebank and the Linksfield Knee Clinic. His clinical focus includes all aspects of knee surgery, from sports injuries and joint replacements to degenerative knee conditions. In addition, he runs the Knee and Sports Clinic at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, where he continues to train and mentor young surgeons.
In 2025, Dr Street was appointed President of the South African Knee Society (SAKS) — a distinguished recognition of his leadership, expertise, and contribution to the field of orthopaedic surgery. His professionalism, compassion, and patient-centred approach have earned him a reputation as one of South Africa’s leading orthopaedic surgeons.
The Old Johannian Association and the St John’s community extend heartfelt congratulations to Dr Street on his outstanding achievements. His continued success and dedication are demonstrations of St John’s College developing individuals well training in body, mind and character, and bring great pride to the College and to the broader Old Johannian community.
