As the sporting programme goes into its end-of-year break, we thought we'd take a look back at some of the significant sporting achievements during the year. There are 10 of them, but it's not a top 10 list. Of course, there were other noteworthy performances that could just as easily have been there. We decided to limit it to 10, though, writes Theo Garrun, Sports Reporter.
- The 1st Water Polo Team won the prestigious SACS tournament for a record 6th time.
- Michael Van Heerden (Head of Fleming 2025) was included in the South African National High Performance Olympic Youth Swimming Training Squad.
- The 1st XI Cricket Team won six out of eight games on their tour to Sri Lanka in September and made the semifinals of the Johnny Waite Knockout competition and the Gauteng SA T20.
- Rowing continued its good performance by coming second in the team competitions at the SA Schools Championships in March, and Gauteng Champs in October, and second in the A Final of the SA Schools Boat Race on the Kowie River in Port Alfred in December.
- The 1st Basketball Team won the American International School tournament in February and then came second at the 20th St John's College Basketball Tournament, losing to Northwood in the final.
- The Basketball Tournament and Easter Rugby Festival, both supported by Standard Bank, were once again highlights of the year, featuring outstanding performances from our teams and showcasing top-level competition. They have become major events on the national sporting calendar, involving top schools from around the country in their respective sports.
- The 1st football team lost by one goal to the hosts in the final of the prestigious St David's Challenge Cup and then put that behind them by beating Parktown in the final of the St Peter's Festival a couple of weeks later.
- Mako Madizha (LV Hill) was called up to the SA Rugby U17 Elite Player Development Camp in December. Strength and Conditioning coach, Mr Sihle Ndlovu, also attended the camp as part of the coaching staff.
- The 1st Chess team won the tournament at the St Peter's Sport and Cultural Festival in September.
- Nkosana Sibiya's 103 not out against St David's in October was a match-winning knock. Still, more importantly, it was a sign that his rehabilitation after a mid-year injury is going well.
- Oh ... and here's one more, just because it's such a nice story. Head of Rugby and 1st team coach, Mr Katleho Lynch's transformation into one of the top up-and-coming coaches of women's rugby took a step forward when he was appointed head coach at SA Rugby's girls U17 Elite Player Development Camp in December. He fulfilled the same role at the U16 girls EPD camp earlier in the year.
