The St John's community made its annual pilgrimage to our birthplace, The Cathedral of St Mary the Virgin, on Sunday, 9 November, for the service of Nine Lessons and Carols.
This glorious celebration of the Incarnation unfolded through poetry, scripture, choral music, community song, and instrumental music for brass and strings. Conducted by Mr Cameron Upchurch and Mr Sidumo Nyamezele, the Chapel Choir rose to the occasion within the inspiring space of the Cathedral, while the packed congregation of College boys, parents, and guests raised their voices in full-throated song, accompanied by the brass ensemble and magnificent organ. In addition to favourite congregational carols, the choral music included pieces ranging from the Renaissance to the present day, with the ever-popular "Come, colours rise" concluding the choir's offerings. This was matched by a powerfully moving rendition of "O Come, all ye faithful" by all present.
More than one first-time visitor to this special annual occasion remarked on how any apprehensions over travelling into the CBD vanished once they were inside the Cathedral, immersed in the service. Long may this uniquely St John's tradition continue.
