It was with great pleasure that the St John's College Water Treatment Plant was opened by Cliff Midgley and blessed by the Revd Fr Thapelo Masemola on 30 May 2024. Cliff, a retired College Geography Teacher and Senior Housemaster, has been associated with St John’s for over 50 years.

Sports, Dramatic and Visual Arts, Music and Public Speaking for the Easter Term were conferred to deserving students at a special assembly before school closed.

St John’s College has suffered a grave loss of a revered Johannian with the death of Hugh Henry Huggett, an education activist and throughout his life, a man who followed the principle of Ubuntu in his varied and memorable career and in all that he had done.

Ahead of South Africa’s general elections on 29 May 2024, with colourful and competing election posters festooning the commute to school, St John’s College hosted a lively ‘Mock Election’ for our College and Sixth Form students.

Masibambane College celebrated its annual Founders Day on 18 May 2024, marking one of the most significant events in the school calendar. St John's has a long history of partnership with Masibambane College, including governance, sports, culture, funding, and staff development support, and we were delighted to be part of the day.

Broadcast journalist and Old Johannian Aubrey Masango (Clayton 1990), well known for his insightful social and political commentary, joined Amphitheatre to address our students on the importance of voting and its critical role in shaping the nation's future.

Fifty-six St John's College students, out of 126 volunteers, dedicated a week of their April holidays to complete the Golden Eagle Residential Project in Parys, Free State, facilitated by Sarah Welton-Blake from CommunityHours SA.

St John's College is saddened to learn of the passing of David Matthews (Nash 1954). Southern Africa has lost a great pioneer in post-apartheid education.

There is no doubt that Easter Term 2024 has been very busy. It has been filled with ups and downs, successes and some sadnesses.

This latest edition of the Advancement Newsletter focuses on the first-ever St John’s College Giving Day, held over 36 hours from 9 to 10 November 2023. The results were truly remarkable, showing what can be achieved when a community of passionate supporters comes together with a united vision.

St John’s College welcomed Dr Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh (Nash 2006) as the special guest speaker at the 6th Hugh Lewin Human Rights Memorial Lecture on Tuesday, 26 March.

A famous Rabbi once explained at a funeral that we have two names. The first is the name our parents call us, and our family and friends know us by that name. The second name we are known by is our reputation, and many people, even strangers, know us by that name.
